Argonne National Laboratory Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)
Argonne Home > Biosciences Home

Before an Argonne P.I. or APS user can work with biological material on site that is or is potentially harmful to humans, they must submit an application for review to the IBC. As the IBC meets monthly, this needs to be done in a timely manner at least one month or more in advance so that the Committee has time to review the submitted protocols and suggest any required revisions. Once approved by the IBC, protocols need not be reviewed for one year, unless approval is contingent upon (1) the possession of a valid permit from a federal or state agency, (2) the availability of special safety equipment, or (3) IRB approval from the University of Chicago or other relevant review board.

APS users are subject to an additional safety review by the APS User Office; see http://www.aps.anl.gov/Safety_and_Training/Experiment_Safety_Approval_Form/index.html
